"He wrote this himself !!"

The pleasure of hearing the child say 'Mama' for the first time may be the mother's - but the satisfaction of seeing her write her name for the first time, watching her first little dance and hearing her describe her first work of art is reserved for her teacher.

And in these moments, the sense of accomplishment on her little face is the reward a teacher keeps getting again and again, day after day. If wealth were to be measured in terms of love and affection, teachers would undoubtedly be the richest of us all!.

Maybe if the role of the teacher was to create Einsteins, Picassos and Gavaskars, it would be less rewarding. But the child is already born with greatness. Her mind is like a creeper - it needs an element to twine on in order to reach the sunshine.

And that is the role of the teacher - to be the stilt, the ladder, the support. The teacher who does this gets to witness the most fascinating experience of all creation - the unfolding and blossoming of a human mind!

Such a teacher may teach English, History or Science, but first she teaches children. She loves her pupils, loves teaching, knows her subjects and has the requisite teaching skills.

Eklavya's Teachers of Tomorrow programme aims to develop such teachers.

In a regular 1 year B.Ed. programme, students teach for about 30 days in a year. At Eklavya, they spend three hours almost every day observing and teaching in a partner school for two years.

Practical training is supported by classes which include a variety of instructional methods like case studies, excursions, projects, seminars and meetings with practising education professionals. The curriculum is a modern one designed on internationally accepted lines after studying leading teacher education programmes in India and abroad.

Students are exposed to computers and the Internet from day one. Apart from this, one hour everyday is set aside for activities like Personality Development, Yoga, Art, Craft and Music/Dance.

Finally, attitudinal training is a key component of the programme. After all, enthusiasm can move mountains, and more can be achieved by a group of positive-minded, enthusiastic teachers than merely capable ones.
